I just wanted to remind everyone of the two-hour delay schedule for tomorrow because I had a hard time finding it on the school website.

P.M. class will be 12:15-2:10

Update for Wednesday, November 24

Hello and happy almost Thanksgiving! I'd like to start off by saying THANK YOU to all of the parents who sent in items for our feast. The kids LOVED it and it was so much fun! I appreciate you and all that you do for the kids so much.

Last week we learned about the letter V. We made volcanoes and vases and continued our work with the -at family. We also finished up our unit in math and we will start the next one on Tuesday. We have been doing lots of Thanksgiving activities also, and we talked about the story of Thanksgiving and what it means to be thankful. We made pilgrims and Native Americans that each said something they were thankful for. We also made canoes with Native Americans in them and a fun turkey book! Today we made pilgrim hats, made butter, played a turkey game, and had our feast. It was a very fun day! Next week we will be learning about the letter C and starting our work with the -an word family. We will also start some of our Christmas crafts and activities!

Notes/reminders:
--A few parents have asked if we will be doing a gift exchange. We will actually be doing a book exchange and I will be sending home more information about it next week.

-- Book orders will be due next Friday. The online code for our class is GMXHN. If you would like the books to be a Christmas gift, please let me know and I will make sure your child does not see the books.

--This is just a heads up that we will not be doing snack after Christmas. All of the kindergarten classes stop snack at that point to start getting the kids ready for first grade, where they will not eat snacks every day.

--Your child will be bringing home a green tree to decorate at home next week. You can use anything you'd like to decorate it! Have your child cut it out and send it back by the following Monday (12/6). There will be more instructions coming home with the tree on Monday.

Have a fantastic Thanksgiving!

Update for Friday, November 12

We have learned so much this week! We learned about the letter A and started our first word family-- -at words. We worked on -at words almost every day, doing crafts, centers, reading books, and creating our own list of -at words. We also learned about the color word green, and we made Green Eggs and Ham on Tuesday! In math, we have been learning about 1 and 2 more than, few than, and the same as. We also started adding words to our stories in writer's workshop, and I was so impressed with how well the kids did sounding out the words! WOW--Can you believe we packed so many new things into one week?! Way to go, students, for doing such a great job with so much new information!

Next week we will be learning about the letter V and the word "to." We will finish up unit 4 in math and do some Thanksgiving activities. The week of Thanksgiving, we will taking our unit 4 math test and learning about the word "purple." We will doing lots of Thanksgiving crafts and activities, and our feast will be that Wednesday!

Notes and reminders:
--I will be typing up our Thanksgiving Feast list and sending it out later today. Don't forget to send in your items on or before Wednesday, November 24! Thanks to all who volunteered--we are going to have tons of great things for the kids to eat!

--Just a reminder that there is no school on Thursday and Friday, November 25 and 26.

--You may have noticed that your kids have not been bringing library books home until Friday. This is a new process for me, and I have learned that I simply cannot get the books checked in and new ones checked out on Fridays in time to have the kids take them home the same day. So books are still due on Fridays, but we will not be checking out new ones until Mondays. Hopefully that is okay with everyone!

--Data folders and report cards came home today. Make sure to check the goal progress sheet and the running record score in the middle of the folder. If you have any questions about any of it, you can email me or write it on the comments section on the paper inside the folder. Just a reminder--the folders need to be sent back with the papers taken out of the pocket. Sign and return the paper inside the pocket as well as the empty report card envelope. The folder, signed paper, and envelope are all due by Wednesday, November 17. Thanks for your cooperation on this and let me know if you have questions!

--Keep sending in your Sunny D labels! We only need 6 more to earn our free books! The school is also having a contest to see which class in each grade can send in the most Box Tops and Campbell's soup labels, so make sure you are saving those and sending them in!

--I sent home our December book order today. These will be due on Friday, December 3 to make sure we get the order back before Winter Break. The online ordering code is GMXHN. Remember, ordering online earns free books for our classroom!

Have a great weekend and enjoy the last of this beautiful weather!

Update for Wednesday, November 3

Hello! I apologize that it's been a while since my last update, but with conferences and the Halloween party, things have been crazy here at school!

This week we have been working on the letter H and doing assessments. Tomorrow is the last day of the first trimester, so report cards will be coming home next Friday 11/12. The data folders I showed you at conferences will also come home on that day. You will be asked to keep all of the papers in the side pocket and send the folder back with a signed paper saying you saw the folder, and the signed report card envelope.

A few reminders:
-In case of a two-hour delay, the TV and radio will say "alternate kindergarten schedule." I wanted to make sure that all of you knew what that meant, so here are the times:
-A.M. will be 9:30-11:15
-P.M. will be 12:15-2:10
Please write these times down somewhere so that you have them handy when the time comes!

-There is no school on Friday due to a teacher work day. This means that homework folders and library books will be due tomorrow! Don't forget to send both things in! Tomorrow is also Horrible Hair day--send your child with crazy hair tomorrow!

-Book orders are also due tomorrow. If you would like to order books, please do so by tomorrow at 2pm. Our class code is GMXHN if you'd like to order online. A few parents have asked if I could keep the kids from seeing the books because they will be Christmas gifts. If you would like me to put them in a bag or if you'd like to pick them up from me instead of me sending them home with your child, please let me know!

-We are still collecting Sunny D labels. We need 10 more to earn twenty free books for our classroom! The labels must be sent in by the end of this month, so keep drinking Sunny D and send in the labels!

-Soon we will start our holiday crafts and activities. Most classes at North do a lot of Christmas activities, but I just wanted to make sure first that there are not any families that are opposed to celebrating the Christmas holiday. Please let me know ASAP if so! Thanks!

-We will be having a feast the day before Thanksgiving. I am starting to compile a list of food items that will need to be sent in. If you would like to send something in, please send me an email and I will assign you an item! Thanks so much for your help!

Have a great long weekend, and as always, let me know if you have any questions/comments/concerns!

Update for October 11

Good morning! Sorry this update is late--I thought I didn't really have much to tell you about, but I started remembering a lot of things this morning and thought I would go ahead and post.

Last week we learned about the letter T. We made turtles and some neat ghosts that will stay at school until after Halloween. We also started writer's workshop last week, which I will explain more at conferences.

This week and next we are learning about the letter B. Our popcorn word is like and we are also learning about the word blue. This week is going to be very busy! Tomorrow is Fire Safety Day and we will be going to a presentation by the Danville Fire Dept. Thursday is Pumpkin Run--if you'd like to help out during our class time, let Mr. Yoder (the P.E. teacher) know! Next week is a short week. We will be having Bubble Day on Tuesday (my favorite day of the whole school year!) and I will be asking a few of you to come in and help with that. Fall break starts on Wednesday 10/20.

A few reminders:

-Parent-teacher conferences are next week. I will be sending home a reminder on Friday with your scheduled time. Unless you've heard otherwise from me, there is no need to bring your child with you.

--Is there a parent in the P.M. class that works at a party store? I vaguely remember someone saying this at parent night, but I can't remmeber who it was! If it was you, please send me an email!

--I have met with the room mothers from each class and they are starting to work on our Halloween party. If you signed up to help out, look for an email or phone call from one of them sometime soon!

--There have been many tardy students in the morning class. Please make sure you're getting your child to school on time! If the students are not in the classroom when the bell rings at 7:45, they are considered tardy.

--I will be sending home a November book order later this week. This will be due on Thursday, November 4--the end of the trimester.

Have a great week!

Update for Friday, October 1

Hello! This week we learned about the letter R. We painted rainbows, made rabbits, created rectangle robots, and began to learn more about patterns. Next week we will be learning about the letter T and our popcorn word is "my."

Notes and reminders:

--This evening is Homecoming! Stop by the parade to see lots of our students walking and throwing candy, and support our Warriors at the game tonight!

--Tomorrow is Fall Festival at South Elementary. It will be tons of fun--take the family for a great evening of games and food!

--If you would like to help out with our Halloween party and did not sign up before, please send me your name by next Thursday.

--We have lots of snacks that need to be eaten. If you are signed up to bring snacks, please don't worry about sending anything unless I send a note the Friday before. Thank you!

--We started checking out library books today. Make sure you read the letter in your child's folder for our library policy!

--Lots of you have been asking if there is anything we need for our classroom. I added a page to the website listing some things that we can always use in our room. I will be changing and adding to the list periodically, so if you'd like to help out during the year, make sure you check the list! On that note--we are making trail mix for T week next Friday and I could use some help with buying all of the food for it. If you'd like to send something in, just send me an email and I'll tell you what we need! Thanks so much!

--Thanks for all of your help with the homework this month. I appreciate you taking the time to help your kids with it each night. If you have any suggestions on how I can improve it, or if you think the assignments are too long or anything, please let me know! I am open to suggestions! The October homework was sent home today. If you forgot to return your child's homework folder today, please send it in on Monday so that you can get the new homework assignments. I will be returning all finished work from September on Monday.

Have a great weekend, everyone!

Update for Friday, September 24

Hello! This week we learned about the letter M and our popcorn word was "see". We made mouse ears and painted with marbles to make some cute mice that are hanging in our classroom! We also made a mask, macaroni M's, and sponge painted leaves to decorate our hallway. Today we did our first assessments--one was a math test over unit 2, and the second was a beginning sounds test with S and M words.

Next week we will be learning about the letter R and reviewing the two popcorn words we've learned so far. We will also be starting the next unit in math, which is patterns. I am sending home an introduction workmat for unit 3 on Monday--this is not something you need to complete and return; it is just for practice.

Reminders:

--I sent home your conference time today. Please let me know immediately if your time will not work for you so that we can reschedule.

--We are collecting Sunny D labels to earn books for our classroom! Please see the flyer that will come home Monday with your child.

--Don't forget that book orders are due next Friday, October 1! I will be placing this order at the end of the school day, so please have your order completed online or turned in to me by that date.

I think that is all for this week! Have a great weekend!

Update for Friday, September 17

Hello! This week we learned about the letter S and our popcorn word was "I." We made snakes, sandwich books, and some cute scarecrows. We also made a class book that was just like I Went Walking. Today we made a stoplight, sunflower snack, and a star scope, and we graphed Skittles. In math we learned about top, middle, bottom and before & after this week. Next week we will finish up this unit with left and right, which is a difficult concept for kindergarteners. Please start working on this at home! We will also be learning about the letter M and our new popcorn word will be "see."

Reminders:

--If you have not yet sent in an art box for you child, please do so next week!

--I sent home new book orders yesterday. These will be due on October 1. Our class code is GMXHN, so use this to order online and earn free books for our classroom! Check out my recommendations on the website for some great books available to you this month.

--I sent home a sign-up sheet for parent/teacher conferences today. Please return this paper as soon as possible, as the conference times are first come, first serve! The sign-up is due no later than next Friday. I will send home your final conference time after I have received all of the papers back.

--I have had a few parents ask about the star stick, so I'm guessing I forgot to explain this at parent night. The kids have a clip on a stick painted yellow, orange and red. If they move their clip, they go to yellow, which is a warning. If they misbehave again and have to move their clip to orange, they get time out for 5 minutes. If they move to red, they get a phone call home and a visit to Mrs. Perkins. If you have questions about this, please let me know!

--Thanks for selling the entertainment books. You should have received your ordered books today. If there was a mistake in your order, please let me know and I will get it taken care of. If you still have not turned in your order or sample book, please send it back right away! It was due last week!

Have a fantastic weekend!

Update for Friday, September 10

Hi everyone! This has been a "beary" fun week! :) This was teddy bear week, and we made brown bears, polar bears, and some bear headbands today. Today was our teddy bera picnic, where we ate PBJs with our bears outside!

Next week we will start our normal curriculum. We will be learning about the letter Ss and the word I. If you'd like to see what's coming up, check out the curriculum schedule on the website.

Reminders for this week:

--Wow! So many kids brought their homework back today! Great job! Make sure you sign the sheet in the front of the folder if your child did his homework. I have no way of checking the more "abstract" assignments, so I need you to sign saying that your child did those things that I can't see prove of. I will be checking the folders over the weekend and they will come back to you every Monday. This shoudn't be a problem because there is no homework on the weekends. Finally, just a reminder to please have your child stick to the calendar and not work ahead. Some of the activities cover things we have not learned yet, so I'd rather you do things on the assigned days.

--Just a reminder that fundraiser books or orders are due on Monday. If you are not planning on selling the books, please make sure you still send back the example book--these are not free! Thank you!

--We are doing a craft on Friday involving toilet paper rolls. Each child needs to bring in one empty toilet paper roll next week.

--Volunteers: Just a reminder that I would really prefer to not have younger siblings come along when you come in to help our class. It is a distraction to the other kids and it is difficult for the parents to give their full attention to the groups of students if they are taking care of other children as well. I'm sorry for the inconvenience, but hopefully you understand! Thank you for your cooperation!

--Supply boxes: Last year my students had supply boxes for their pencils, crayons, etc., while all of the other kindergarten teachers used Ziploc bags for each student. They convinced me to try the bags this year, but it is already not working. The bags have holes in them and things are constantly getting lost. Therefore, I would like to go back to supply boxes. If you could send in a small art box (not the big ones!) with your child, I would really appreciate it. You do not need to write his/her name on it--I will do that as they are brought in so that all of the names can be found in the same spot. The good news is, they are very cheap now that it's not back to school time! Someone told me they saw them for 10 cents at Wal-Mart last week! If this is an issue or if you cannot send one in, please let me know as soon as possible. I would like to have all of the boxes in by Friday 9/17. Thank you!

Have a fantastic weekend and I'll see you Monday!

Update for Friday, September 3

Hello and happy Friday! This week we have been learning about the five senses and apples. We had lots of fun learning one sense each day--we sampled different foods, guessed what items were based on their smells, and lots of other activities. We also graphed our favorite color of apples and learned about how apples are grown. In math, we started working on location words. We will continue this next week. Next week is also Bear Week. We will be making bear crafts and even having a Teddy Bear Picnic on Friday (more info to come on this next week).

A few reminders and important info:

--Please look for a gray or black folder today in your child's backpack. This is his homework folder. The first page lists the directoins and all info, so if you have any questions, please let me know! I also explained it to the children today. The only thing I forgot to include on the info sheet-- Please do not have your child complete an entire week's homework in one evening. It is important to stick to the calendar so that your child does not have too much work to do in one evening. We also may not learn how to do the homework until later in the week, so they may not know how to do it until that day.

--The Book Bags that came home last week can stay at home. You do not need to send these back and forth to school. Just keep them in a safe place so that your child can easily find his/her books when it is time to practice.

--If you have not yet paid your child's milk money, you received a notice from the cafeteria this week. Please make sure you pay this ASAP, as it is past due and your child has been drinking milk with no money in his account.

--If you are going to send in treats for your child's birthday, please let me know ahead of time so that I can plan for it. You also do not need to send in drinks if it is before Christmas break, because the children get milk every day until then.

--I know some of you are still having email problems. I have been working with technology to get it all figured out. The problem happened when they changed my name this summer, so they are trying to work out all the kinks. Thanks for your patience as they try to get it all figured out!

--I updated a few things on the website. I added more websites for you and your child to check out, and I also added a schedule of the order we will learn the letters and popcorn words. This will start with the letter S and the word "I" on Monday, September 13. My next project is to add pictures from this school year. Thanks for your patience as I work to get everything updated! If you have any suggestions for things you would like to see on the website, please let me know! I want to make this as useful for you as possible, so any input from you will definitely be appreciated.

--Here is some info sent from the office today about the fundraiser that came home yesterday:

Entertainment Book orders clarification:

1. Entertainment Books for this sale are $30.00!!

2. The prices listed on the inside of the order envelope are for Out of Town Editions Only! (for example, if your grandma in Miami, Florida – edition #0154 – wants to purchase a book, the cost for her Florida book is $35.00)

3. Use the enclosed Entertainment Book as a SAMPLE to show family, friends and neighbors. You may sell the sample book to your last customer (or yourself) or return it with your order form.

4. All orders will be filled at the end of the sale. Please enclose payments in your order envelope.

5. The sample book is NOT a free item – it must be returned at the end of the sale if you do not buy it or sell it to your last customer.

Thank you for your support of this Danville Community Education Foundation fundraiser!

--I placed the Scholastic book order this afternoon. The books usually take about a week or so to come in, so I will send those home as soon as the order arrives. This was a huge order! I am so glad to see that you are supporting your children by reading to them at home! I will be placing orders at the beginning of each month, so the next order booklet will come home in the next few weeks.

Have a fantastic (much needed!) 3-day weekend! As always, email me if you have any questions/comments/concerns (or ideas for the website)!

Update for August 27, 2010

Hi everyone! This week we learned about colors and shapes. We also finished up our sorting unit in math and started patterns. Next week we will learn about the five senses and apples, and we will start the next math unit, which is directional words (over, under, beside, behind, etc.).

A few reminders:

-Pictures: Thursday is picture day! Envelopes were sent home today. Plese return the envelope if you plan on ordering pictures. Make sure you put them in your child's folder so that I will definitely get them!

-Email: Thanks for being patient with email this week. First of all, I have had bronchitis and I was out a few days this week, so I am trying to catch up on email and will hopefully have them all answered today. I know a few people were also having problems sending emails to me this week--I checked on this and no one else is having problems, so the only thing I can figure out is make sure that you put 2 s's on the end of my name, or it will come back undeliverable! Last thing--Harmony had a few glitches and they should all be fixed now, so hopefully everyone will receive all emails from now on.

-AM class: The breakfast menu has changed! Make sure you check out the menu in today's Smoke Signal.

-Volunteering: Thanks for sending me your preferences for when you would like to volunteer! I am planning on waiting a few more weeks before we start this. My goal is to start our Friday fun activities once we start learning a letter a week, which is mid-September. I will give you plenty of notice before you need to come in, so no worries there!

-Reminder----no school on Labor Day (September 6)

-Still working on the website--updates coming soon! :) If you have any suggestions for things you would like to see, please let me know!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Update for August 20

Hello and happy Friday! This week we learned about bugs and it was so much fun! We made lots of crafts--a firefly, a handprint spider, and a bumble bee. We practiced our names with Word Worms and even went on a bug hunt today (pictures to come soon). We have also been practicing rhyming and sorting, and we will start patterns next week.
**If anyone finds a green magnifying glass in your child's backpack, please send it back on Monday. Two disappeared today after our bug hunt!

Next week we will be learning about the colors and basic shapes. Please check your child's folder for a note about our color week--we are going to wear our special color each day!

Just a reminder, milk money was due today. If you have not paid for your child's milk yet, please send a check on Monday or you can put it in his or her account online.

Friday Helpers: If you signed up to help out in our classroom on Fridays (or if you didn't sign up, but would like to help!), I will be putting together a schedule soon. If you could please send me an email in the next few days and let me know how often you would like to help out, I can make a schedule and get it out to you. I will probably be starting to have people come in the next few weeks.

I have been trying to update some things on the website, but I am having trouble editing my pages right now. I will try to get new pictures added and a new calendar etc. on there soon. Thanks for your patience!

Each Friday, check your child's folder for a clip slip. I will be sending this home if your child moved his clip at all during the week. It lists what day the clip was moved and why I had him move his clip. You can always email me if you have any questions about this.

Scholastic book orders will go home on Monday. I am sending home two flyers and you may send those back with a check if you'd like to order anything. Another option (and maybe a better one!) is to use the website to order! I will send home a letter about online ordering, but keep in mind that every time you order online, we get a free book for our classroom! There are also more books available online that are not in the flyers, so make sure you check it out. There are some great titles this month! I will be doing an order each month this school year.

As always, please leave a comment or send me an email if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions! Have a great weeekend!

Update for August 13, 2010

Hello everyone! Well, we made it through the hardest part of the year--the first week! We are starting to become familiar with our routines and procedures and we have been working on becoming friends. On Tuesday we made a craft to go with the book The Kissing Hand, which is one of my favorite stories. I heard that all of you liked them--hopefully they told you the story to go along with it! We also spent a lot of time working on a book about school rules. Next week will be bug week and we will start rhyming and working on writing our names correctly.

I wanted to send home a schedule of what our day looks like, just so that you are aware. Here is our daily schedule:
Morning jobs (Folders in the tray, backpacks away, breakfast, get started on work)
Morning work
Morning meeting (story time, calendar, agenda)
Restroom break (they may go other times if needed)
Carpet literacy work
Work time 1
Snack
Recess
Work time 2
Pack up
Story
Go home
If you have any questions about our day, please let me know!

AM class: Breakfast starts on Monday. If your child will be eating breakfast, please send in a note on Monday telling me whether they will be eating every day or just occasionally. Please make sure your child has money in his account for breakfast--they will be turned away if they do not have money. You can send in a check or cash with your child or you may add money on Harmony.

Milk money is due next week. It is $43.50, which will last up until Christmas break. Please send a check or exact change next week in your child's folder so that I will definitely get it.

Speaking of folders, everyone is doing a greta job of bringing their folders back each day! Make sure you check them each night to get any notes and clear out things you can keep at home.

Reminder: If you took a Post-It with an item on it at parent night, make sure you either send in the item or let me know if not so that I can find someone else to send it in! One item I forgot--hand soap for our sink in the classroom. If you'd like to send some in, it would be appreciated!

I also wanted to make sure you all have my contact information:

Welcome to Kindergarten!

Hello! Welcome to Mrs. Douglass's kindergarten class! This is going to be a fantastic year and I can't wait to start my second year of teaching. I started this website in the middle of last school year and it was a huge hit with the parents, so hopefully you will enjoy using it as well! Check back here often for updates and information pertaining to our class. I will try to update every Friday afternoon. I will also send out a mass email to let you know when there is a new blog post. Please leave comments--it helps me so much to see what you are thinking and get feedback on how things are going from a home perspective. If you ever need anything at all, please just send me an email! I will get back to you as soon as possible! Thanks and I'm looking forward to a great year!
